Pwani University
K-VAC will be incubating for the first 3 years at Pwani University’s Innovation & Incubation Centre (UIIC). The UIIC is the primary hub at the Kilifi campus designed to nurture research, creativity, and entrepreneurship. It is spearheaded by the Directorate of Innovation and Commercialization to translate academic research into practical, market-ready socio-economic solutions.
Key Features and Initiatives
PU-TVET Innovation Lab: Co-funded by the Safaricom M-Pesa Foundation, this dedicated lab provides hands-on skills and entrepreneurship training for local youth.
Research Translation: The centre works alongside bodies like the Kenya National Innovation Agency (KeNIA) to promote university-driven innovation and commercialization.
Regional Partnerships: The university partners with external organizations such as the Kilifi Innovation Hub and Swahilipot Hub to foster community engagement and sponsor events like the annual Pwani Innovation Week.
Kilifi County Government
Vocational Training Centers (VTCs) play a key role in Kenya’s education sector by providing skills training and helping to close the skills gap in the labor market. VTCs have a presence at the sub-county level, bringing training to the local communities.
K-VAC has signed a 3 year collaborative agreement with Kilifi’s Directorate of Vocational Training, Department of Education and ICT. This collaboration allows KVAC to specifically recruitment of female students, single mothers and youth with disabilities at the sub-county village level, so as to reach the most vulnerable and ensure inclusion.
In partnership with Kilifi County Government, K-VAC is also establishing a 6 month paid internship programmeand subsequent work placement network for all services and facilities run by the local county government (local county schools, civic departments, county development projects, etc) where visual media services are utilized or required. This arrangement will provide a pathway to work experience for all our students and potential employment opportunities.
This arrangement also provides the golden opportunity of our intern students to create digital content for all sectors of the county government in which they will be placed.
